Saw this snake during a field trip in north Venezuela.
Anyone got an idea what sort it is?

It'd probably be best if you could post a picture so we can see the distinct head and body details.

My guess would be Atropoides of some sort. The common name is usually "jumping viper" but I have no idea what species are in Venezuela. The patterning seems way wrong for a Fer-de-lance (Bothrops).

Dave,
Great guess, I was looking at this genus closely as well, but most pics that I've seen of Atropoides (Jumping Pit Vipers), as well as most, if not all Bothrops, have that temporal eye thing going.
My guess would be a Hognose viper, Porthidium lansberguli houtmani. Try a googlization.

I'm going to put in another vote for a jumping viper, but I could not possibly go any further than that. Cool find, I'm quite jealous.

John! Where the hell have you been? Welcolm back to AB, anyhow .. you've definitely been missed.

I think you're likley right on this one. While the body patterning could go either way, the head markings (or lack thereof) look a lot like the images I pulled on google. I will assume that a better shot of the head could distinguish these genera for sure, though, based on scalation?

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Actually, I never really left. Just not as active as I used to be, I guess. These days I'm breeding less tarantulas and some snakes. I've had some bad luck this year as far as tarantulas go. Must be the very odd Pennsylvania weather (?). That's what I'm blaming anyways.
