I got a Eresus walckenaeri a month ago, the only other spider I’ve owned has been a small adanson’s jumping house spider that I found in my kitchen and decided to keep as a pet.
being a arachnid pet owner in Japan is a bit tricky because there aren’t a lot of places that cater to spiders. And although the guy who sold me the spider gave me some information, I still feel very ignorant and pretty confused.
especially about her enclosure, which I was told to keep small, so I have kept her in a tiny enclosure with some brown paper I got from the spider shop. She originally came in a super tiny container where I suppose she must have been comfortable enough since I wholeheartedly believe the sider shopowner much know far more than I do when it comes to spiders. She has completely webbed up her new enclosure and seems to be fine. But I’m paranoid and wondering if I should have left her in the original tub.

Her old and new enclosures. Is the new one just way to big? By now she’s webbed it up to the high heavens.

They are ok.

I love to see velvet spiders in a terrarium with loads of sticks so they web up the whole stuff.
To just "keep" them, this or a cork bark will do aswell.

Sticks and a cork! Okay! How about disinfecting them before putting it in the enclosure? I’ve heard people say they microwave stuff first. These little guys absolutely love webbing up every thing don’t they? It’s adorable.

Thats a big discussion. Some people shower with their sticks first, sleep in the same bed for a week and take them to Mac donalds.

If you get slim ones and clean them with hot water, give it a visual check, it should be fine since eresus is kept very dry no funghi will stand a chance. (For humid enclosures, just add springtails)

I think if we are gonna keep these arachnids in captivity, we might as well try to simulate their normal evironment to the best of our abilities. Id ditch the paper and look at those care guides @HeartBum mentioned.

I’m very interested in getting rid of the paper. It’s… unsightly. But it was the only thing I got from the seller and I’m a bit nervous about adding something else that might get the little girl sick. I’m going back to the shop tomorrow to see if there’s anything else I can learn about her care.
My lack of understanding of forums is showing. I thought @HeartBum’s comment was an odd post merging 😭😭😭. I’m going through that too now.

I got some store bought twigs originally meant for hamsters and some bark sold for beetles, do you think that will work? Since it’s store bought, inside sealed plastic does it need disinfection? If so, should I microwave it or boil it? I’m pretty sure boiling it will destroy the bark

Nope. I just found out the back is a terrible idea. It’s likely to grow mold.

Once again, the enviroment of a velvet Spider will not really support any mold or funghi. You can use everything, even paper ;).
If you have any pics, that would help, i am not sure what you bought there. Corkbark for hamsters is OK, just give it a hot shower. No need for cooking and god, leave your microwave in peace, who microwaves stuff?
I am more concerned you will kill your microwave xD.

I don’t know where I read to microwave stuff to disinfect it😣
I used a leaf and some drift wood in the end. She’s beginning to web it up again and I hope this is good because I won’t be disturbing her again. Poor thing suffering her inexperienced owner. 😣

Better than before, let me give you some Inspiration (i know, this is not the top notch of layout)
Goodness! Those are quite beautiful! Incidentally i happened to be out for a hike in the mountains today! I know there are no pesticides and the like up there so I’ve picked up some beautiful twigs and leaves. Imma BOIL NOT MICROWAVE them when I get home!
what do you think of using shells? Shells that were Out drying in the sun for a long time.

You don’t need to boil or microwave any sticks, that won’t sanitize them or will only make them more prone to grow mold. The major concern when using products from outside is if they have come in contact with pesticides or chemicals. If not then they are totally safe to use as is, just brush them off to make sure there are no hitchhikers on them.

as for the paper, I’m puzzled that you think soil Wouldn’t be more suitable as a substrate then paper. I would replace it with some peat moss, cocofiber or topsoil that is free of additives and chemicals like fertilizers. Ditch the paper, no spider lives on paper in the wild.

… there isn’t any paper there now. That’s a giant leaf I tore apart?
To be fair no spider lives in an Easter egg on the wild either.
I do like the advice on the sticks. They were from the country side hiking trail where they want bugs to live And thrive for kids to enjoy. Beetle hunting and the like. So im assuming they are safely free from any adverse chemicals🦄

ah the pet shop owner wasn’t keen on me adding any soil to her enclosure. Pretty against it actually. Thus my aversion to adding soil in there, I’m not messing around with things I’m not sure about and regretting it later😅😅😅
