After having Holley and her ts over for our spider social, I'm really regretting my allergy to t hair because I wanted to hold them, but couldn't. How do you get around allergies, or is handling just out of the question for us?

hmmmm. gloves maybe? or just grin and bear it, and keep some anti-histamines handy. im allergic to anything with fur or feathers, yet i work in a petshop as an animal specialist. the herps and inverts dont bother me, but the birds and small mammals kill me. even with a mask, cleaning the bird habitats pretty much closes my nasal passages completely.

Paige,
my t's consist mostly of sp. that have urticating hairs. I don't want to build up an allergy to them and have to get rid of them so I don't handle them at all and when I do anything to their enclosure that might cause them to kick hairs I usually have their enclosure on a desk that has a HEPA air filter running full blast to suck in any airborne hairs.
who took pictures at your spider social? we want to see!
:)

Holley will have pictures soon, and I'll post some of the ones Kennric took once he e-mails them to me.

We're having one again next month; it was fun, but I'm hoping we'll have a larger turnout next time.

Thats great going guys.

The invert partys we have in the Denver area started out last October and we have been having them about every two months since then.

http://www.arachnopets.com/arachnoboards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4609&highlight=denver

We try to recruit people all the time...the more the merrier. The best turnout so far was the one at Atrax house back in December, we had 8-9 show up. Our next one here will be March 9th...a little longer this time. We usually have some trades and spider matings.

For me I get to learn a lot about T's and other inverts/herps other people keep as none of my other friends are into this hobby at all. Everyone I have met so far has been great. It has definitely helped me get more involved in the hobby and given another group of friends to hang out with. We all rotate at whose house where the party is held on a volunteer basis. It has so far worked well.

I would definitely recommend to anyone who lives in an area with enough people; to try to get their own shindigs together. You learn from each others mistakes/successes and expand the potential for finding others who may have intrest in breeding their inverts. The web is great and all...I would consider quite a ew people here friends..but nothing beats hanging out in person...and you are more likely to get to know the 'real' person behind the avatar/screen name.

Yeah, Holley and I are thinking about having barbecues this summer. Now we just need a snappy name, a logo, and a t-shirt.:D

we had a blast!
I brought my A chalcodes (everyone fell in love with her), G pulchra (a bit flicky, but settled down), B albopilosum (Frizz, mom to all those slings), E campestratus (no handling, she MAY be in premolt), L parahybana (who was REALLY REALLY behaving wondefully, and very photogenic!), G areostriata (spastic, but handlable) and a A eutylenum (very cute, and docile)
There was a little girl there a bit older than Shelby, and she was just wonderful with the Ts.
We're going to do it again, and like Paige says, we are hoping to get more to join us each time.
Holley
PS- Paige made the most AWESOME jerk chicken too ;)

I fell in love with the A. chalcodes! She's quite the girl. All of your ts were great, I was so glad you brought them since Europa is the only one I own that can be handled safely. (I just haven't run across any cuddly OW ts!)

You'll have to bring the huntsman back as it grows so we'll have a true spider besides my little funnelweb to show people.

Glad you like the chicken. I'll put more effort into cooking next time, maybe make some curry or something.

As an afterthought ; Europa is the swedish name for Europe.
I know you were all dying to hear that, so there you are.

Can I ever agree to that. When I was working at my friend's pet shop, I was fine with the herps and inverts. However, the bird feather, dander, rodent litter and dust, all had me sneezing and unable to breathe. My nasal passages would swell shut, and my eyes would puff up..
Peace,
Gillian
