ALL My DUBIA'S DIED!!!

I'm bummed out! I just got back from being on a fishing boat for 3 months for crab season. I took 9 of my T's, my dubia colony and some blatta lateralis. It was a great trip, all the way up to Alaska and back with no problems.

Then, on the 5 hour drive home, I was worried about them getting cold so I put my blankets on top of the tub and turned on the back heater in my SUV. When I get home, I realized I've overheated them and they are all dead. The other roaches are fine, but the Dubia's must have "steamed" or something. After I get done with the cursing, I decided to post a question, even if I'm going to sound like a dope.

Has anyone ever heard of vacuum packing and freezing roaches for use later?
And if so, does anyone want these? They were big, fat, healthy roaches that were fed fruits and veggies, and a little high protien dog food. They were too big for my T's, and my Bearded Dragon doesn't want it if it doesn't run first. Let me know. I live in Spokane, WA, but could ship, I guess.

OMG...thats awful...hmm i don't really agree with what you are planning there. For me I would rather buy a new colony rather than risking the unknowns of feeding those dead roaches...thats my opinion at least...:)

I agree that it wouldn't be a good idea to feed roaches that had expired for unknown reasons, since there could be a possibility of something poisionous or a disease of some kind. BUT, this was a healthy, thriving colony, that was well fed. They all had huge, chunky "butts". They all expired because they had no air circulation (under the blankets) and my heater apparently gets hotter back there on the floor than I though. Compeletly my HUGE error.

Anyway, I was kind of thinking of them as little meatballs that I could save for later. Such a waste, either way, but I would be just a little less bummed if they could be used for something. Any other thoughts, anyone?

if you have critters that will eat frozen/thawed roaches, by all means, utilize them!

that's my .02

As long as you froze them before they began to rot they should be fine (if you can find something to eat them of course) but dead roaches can spoil rapidly.

I used bag crickets up and put in freezer for later use but no need for any of that now that I have my roach colonies going.

Know anyone with a big monito lizard?

I raise and sell roaches so I have a lot of them myself. Freeze them an find someone who lives near you that has a savannah monitor or a blackthroat. Mine eats frozen thawed roaches all the time.
