Alaus oculatus - Eyed Click Beetle

Found this guy in the woods today. Those pincers you see in the second picture work. You can see where it bit me a little to the right of the beetle.

I caught one of those this week camping, the amount of force they exert 'clicking' is amazing.
I can't believe it bit you! We can't all be bug-whisperers, I guess.

That pic gives me a nostalgic feeling. The last time I saw one of those was as a boy playing at my grandparents in Alabama. They seemed huge back then.

I've seen little click beetles somewhere (maybe here, maybe northern California), but nothing that big.
