An unmated male will keep on spinning webs. There will come a time where he might be spinning a web a week. The embolus when charged just look a bit swollen and sometimes shinny. Not to much bigger then they normally are but you can tell the difference. The embolus should be visiable all the time, though because they are tucked back on the palps they can be hard to spot sometimes.

I'd say 5.5" or so. I have had a smaller female produce, and the sac was small. I try to wait till 5.5" but if I have a MM and a female that's only 5" I still try.
