Anyone come across this article from Cracked?

Can you guys think of anything scarier?

I think a "shrieking" bullet ant would be quite funny to witness... and a sick/crazy part of me wants to get stung by one just to see what it feels like.

well I do, just to see if it hurts. I have been stung by bumble bees , honey bees, guinea wasps, yellow jackets, red wasps, black hornets, and every ant i have seen around here. Non hurt, just a tiny itch. I'd like to get stung by one of these to test my immunity. I may change my mind afterward tho lol

Haha... awesome. I know it would hurt me but I want to see exactly HOW much it would hurt. I want to see how high my pain tolerance is because it's always been pretty high. If you get your hands on some let me know. ;)

those giant hornets are no joke. when i was in the marine corps training in the jungles of okinawa, we came up on a nest once. it was like they felt the vibrations through the ground because they wouldnt let anyone get within 15 feet of the nest, any closer and they would send a few out a cirle around us. they're enormous and i would hate to get stung.

I feel like there was some exaggeration in the article, but it's meant to be humorous so that's not too bad. The comments made me want to roll about on the floor laughing though; I love how every time someone tried to sound snide and intellectual, they each managed to say something completely false and idiotic.
At any rate, I'm not surprised at all that most of the contendors were bees, ants, and wasps. If my memory serves me, they are all part of order Hymenoptera, which is full of all kinds of highly defensive, amazingly organized hive/swarm species. Bees have also shown to rate eerily high on the cognitive scale, surprisingly, and are currently a hot topic of behavioral research.
Bot flies though... ungh. I've had to deal with them a ton working at animal sanctuaries and as a wildlife rehabilitator. Horse gut bot flies have a bad habbit of finding their way into rabbits since they graze similarly. But a rabbit's system isn't really meant for a horse bot, so they usually migrate to all kinds of crazy places in the body and cause massive damage instead of just being harmlessly pooped out. One tunneled through a rabbit's brain and out its sinuses when I was working at a sanctuary, had to remove it myself. The animal suffered irreperable neurological damage and had a nasty spot on its nose that would puff in and out when in breathed because of the soft and body tissue damage from the exiting larvae.

Yeah...as someone who routiely works with wasps, I'm not too impressed with that list. Those animals aren't really that big of a deal and bullet ants don't pose that big of a risk to humans in their natural habitat. The risk of army ants is also exxaggerated.

What about Ascaris or ginuea worms? Eyeworms?

Cutaneous Larva Migrans?

All these technically qualify as 'bugs'...unless they're talking strictly arthropods.

Nematodes are 'friggin scary.

Aw shucks. I was hoping to see something I hadn't heard of. :)

At least the botfly wasn't a hymenopteran. "Diptera represent!" :D

Exactly. I can handle a 3 inch hornet, but a nematode ending up in (and feeding upon) my vitreous humor?

Hell, no!
