    Misunderstood tarantulas???

What annoys me more than people asking stupid questions or getting scared/grossed out are the people who like to play know it all and say stuff like, “Oh you should get a cobalt blue, those are really pretty.” As if wall of tarantulas in front of them are not impressive enough, and also not...

    Ceramic dishes from Amazon

Soap is fine. You just want to be careful about residue. Personally, I tend to wash with dish soap, rinse with water, rinse with vinegar, then rinse with water again. Hot water.

    Ceramic dishes from Amazon

If they’re food safe, they’re fine. Just wash and rinse them thoroughly first. They are super cute.

Mushrooms grew in T. Apophysis enclosure

Just tell your girlfriend not to eat the mushrooms and she’ll be fine 😂 if you’re thinking about sterilizing decor/substrate for the new enclosure, don’t. It will only make it a more inviting environment for the first thing it comes into contact with to colonize it without competition.

wet towel to keep vivarium humid ?

I’d worry about bacteria grown as well as the wet towel decreasing temperatures. I’m using a silicone baking mat on top of my scorpions enclosure. It’s heat resistant so I can also set the heat lamp on top of it and it’s easy to wipe down.

    Sling drowned! Help!

You can give slings cut up sections of larger feeders. They will scavenge. If you’re nervous about water dishes, you could add a single plastic leaf or something like a suction cup and regularly leave a drop of water on it so the sling still has access to water. Did you ever wash the bottle cap...

    Increasing ambient heat for scorpion

Yes, I’m using a dimming thermostat. For me it is 100% necessary because the climate in my area is pretty erratic.

    Increasing ambient heat for scorpion

My scorpion enclosure is a 5.5 gal aquarium, which seems about half the size of the enclosure you have. I got a 75W red basking bulb, I had to put the lamp directly on top of the enclosure for it to significantly raise temps. I have it controlled by a thermostat so it doesn't get too hot. The...

    Sterilite Question

For cutting, I'd suggest using a wood burning kit with the blade attachment, do this outside. For the door, I might get a piece of acrylic slightly larger than the opening and drill holes in the acrylic and lid of the bin (or use a round attachment on the wood burner) and attach it with some...

Brand new owner of some future T's. Questions about sexing, substrate, T's in general

Expos are usually a great place to get cork.

Brand new owner of some future T's. Questions about sexing, substrate, T's in general

Wait for them to molt. If you can get the exuviae out in decent shape, have good fine motor skills, lots of patience, and microscope (I recommend a stereo microscope) you can sex tarantulas from a pretty small size. Also, if you get a stereo microscope you'll never have to struggle with splinter...

    Heterometrus ID help

I was wondering that as well. I was able to get a better look at the chela and it looks female from what I can see. I’ll update with better pictures when I get a chance. I didn’t want to add unnecessary stress so I just plopped that whole plastic hide into the new enclosure with the scorpion in...

Thoughts on these Microscopes for molt sexing?

I think the middle option is the one I have. Love it.

    Heterometrus ID help

Well, I tried to hold out to see what I could find at the upcoming expo, but I had a crap week so I decided to get one of the AFS’s from Petsmart. This is the best shot I can get at the moment because I’m stuck in the car with a napping toddler. Once we go inside I can get better pictures. I’m...

New tarantula owner , confused if she is dead or molting ?

The bald spot looks too light in color to be close to molting. It looks like there are some corrections that could be made with your enclosure. If you post a picture of the whole entire enclosure, members here can give you some pointers on how to optimize your husbandry.

I just re-homed my Antilles pink toe..A.K.A. Versicolor tarantula

You don’t need to pay attention to humidity numbers. Just let the enclosure dry out. You may have seen care sheets that say these need high humidity but those are incorrect.

    Screen-Lid Enclosure Question

It’s basically the same thing OP and I have, you’d need to punch a hole in it with like a hammer and chisel/screwdriver and then once you create an opening you’d want tin snips (basically scissors for cutting metal) to cut out the mesh. My husband may have a more efficient idea, he’s been...

    Screen-Lid Enclosure Question

Cut out the metal and replace it with acrylic that has holes in it. The only acrylic I have on hand is pretty thick, that’s why I’ll need to use a scroll saw. For thinner acrylic you can use a wood burner with a blade attachment to cut it to size, and a round attachment to burn holes in it. (Do...

    Delayed shipping woes

I would suggest letting them warm up slowly. Bring the box in and leave it closed for a few hours before unpacking them. Big changes in temperature are harder for them to handle. I would also contact the seller and ask what they advise if there is any LAG they are willing to honor at this point...

    Screen-Lid Enclosure Question

It’s better than mesh, but not as safe as acrylic. I have a GBB I’m about to rehouse into an enclosure with an expanded metal top like that. I’d feel comfortable housing a GBB or an arboreal with it but not a more clumsy terrestrial. I still plan to modify the lid when we get time to bust out...
