M.balfouri experiences - keeping individuals compared to communals

I have quite a number of this species both in individual setups and communal enclosures. 2 communals of 0.1.8 (female and her "slings" although they are roughly 2" now) and a 1.1.6 (also female and her offspring, but these are juveniles around the 3" range) as well as 2 mature males isolated and...

@Little Grey Spider it is, and she has chewwed away the bottom little by little as shes grown, as you can see in the photo, and she literally just contorts her way in there. its actually quite impressive

    It's time to grow up!

This hanumaviasamica has his behind the backdrop since she was a tiny sling. I think it's time to grow up, you're getting to old for these shenanigans

2 M balfouri in one enclosure

well its not exactly 50/50 odds. it seems that for some species, one gender is prevalent over another. C sp. "electric blues" for example supposedly have a high rate of males to females

2 M balfouri in one enclosure

while true, very very few people have observed this species in nature AT ALL due to the nature of their locality. honestly not much is known at all about how they habitate in the wild. From witnessing the "Motherly" nature of adult females with their fresh slings and how long the slings will...

2 M balfouri in one enclosure

i currently have 2 balfouri communals going strong. one is an adult female and 5 offspring around 2-2.5" ea in a 14x6x8 enclosure (due for an upgrade). and the second is an adult female and 12 offspring around 1-1.5" in a 24X12X14 enclosure (borderline too much room). They dont seem to need...

@Jamie M in my experience H incei do not show these behavioral tendencies. I have two incei communals that have had a 50% fatality/canabolism rate even while grotesquely over fed.

@efmp1987 they do in fact do this. They are very aware and caring for their young, often killing and then dropping prey for them. Way easier than messing with pin heads and fruit flys

M balfouri truly are the anomalies to tarantulas

M balf Mommy and pesky children

Interesting observation. Fed Mom 2 super worms since none of the slings were out, they were all down the burrow.. but as soon as the mom made the kill they all came out, crawling all over her and literally eating out of her own mouth. the mother did not apear to be eating but simply holding it.

    M.balfouri communal set ups?

I've read reports of P subfusca and H incei reportedly being seen together in the wild. But I can't remember the sources to cite them or if they were reputable. The general consensus of the hobby is that M balfouri are by far the safest communal with very few/infrequent reports of canabolism as...

    Color variation in Monocentropus balfouri

Balfouri go for about 40$ a piece for a 2i spiderling. They are becoming more and more common, but the demand is still very high

    Color variation in Monocentropus balfouri

very nice, hopefully i dont just have an oddity and i get some blue females from this group as well

    Color variation in Monocentropus balfouri

The only thing is I haven't heard of many, if any, species that show that level of variation on females in equivalent molted cylces within the same species/morph. Especially coming out of the same sac (as bluejay has shown). The only that comes to mind are the H incei

    Color variation in Monocentropus balfouri

Very interesting. I see some of the tan, the orange, and the darker ones. Now I'm wondering what drives the variation
