Agree, one of my favourite reptiles too. I have a terrarium at home, captured some, fed them and released them in the wild. Where I live most people kill them and they are harmless...
Afraid to get bitten both by snakes and spiders, but to handle and touch, I prefer spiders...
As far as I know have garter snakes venom glands, but without any connections to their teeth. Here (Austria) they are "not venomous", you can buy them without problems. I never heard about problems with bites of a garter snake.
