I'm trying to ID this guy. I bought him at a Repticon show last weekend. He was labeled A. versi, which he clearly is not. Thanks to KezyGLA I think I've narrowed it down to Phormictopus, just can't figure out the species. I also found a pic where someone called it a Cuban purple. Can anyone ID him?
@KezyGLA Do you know the general care for these guys? Do they like dry or moist substrate? What size housing? How big do they get? Aggressive? I'm guessing it's terrestrial, he really likes to burrow. I can't find much info on them.
@frodogecko they like it a little moist, but are okay with dryer climates for periods of time. overflow the water dish weekly and youre good to go. Phormictopus get very defensive as they grow, enjoy..
They will start to stay out in the open more often when they reach the 4 inches stage. All Phormictopus sp. are extremely agressive eaters and can be very defensive. Always use tongs when maintenance and feed. The venom is not really significant but are strong spiders and they have quite large fangs will hurt. These are very bold, colourful, large and relatively long-lived species. It is an extremely underrated genus IMO.
@KezyGLA Thanks for the link. This may be a stupid question, but what is IMO? I'm still a beginner and I want to understand everything I can about tarantula keeping. Especially now that I have 19 and I want more.
