New river

Aphonopelma sp new river just molted and hooked out. So how old is he since this was his mature molt and how much longer does he have? I cant find any info anywhere
Aphonopelma? Oh, they don't die.

Okay they do but it takes an eternity. He'll probably live for a number of years.

Agreed, I'd expect about another two years out of him.

As for how old... absolutely no telling.

Well that's good to know. I thought for sure he was a she but when i looked at the molt and hooks earlier i got so bummed!

Hi Cozzi,

It takes me 15 minutes to drive to New River, depending on police presence (LOL), I love my chalcodes and have decades worth of observation to share. Normally males mature in late Summer and don't not live into Winter, sad fact of life I'm afraid. In captivity, things change, I've heard stories that some individuals will have a second molt after they mature, an exception rather than the rule. I would ask to please make him available to another AB member so that his genes could be passed on to the next generation, might I suggest that you PM ErinM31, as she has a newly molted lady, that she is interested in copulating (please insert a Capt. Jack Sparrow imitation).

Best of luck, always,

Tom

@Cozzi Males are actually great beginner tarantulas. No long term commitment like with the females, and generally cheaper. Unfortunately, if the hobbyist decides to get into the hobby from there... yeah, they'll experience their first death relatively quickly.

Note that two years is a decent amount for a male. The females of some species are long lived, and so are the males. Even after maturity. More commonly though, you're lucky to get much more than a year out of a mature male.

"They don't die" haha not true. My female hentzi died after a year when she molted and her abdomen burst. In the previous molt she lost 2 legs. I think she was just old though, I got her at an expo and she was full grown then.

Yikes! Im keeping a close eye on him. So far he's been sluggish and putting his legs in all sorts of odd positions and freaking me out but i read they are stretching and getting used to their new bodies as it hardens. He was extremely overfed by previous owner so hopefully there won't be any abdomen bursting (not that yours was from that or if that's even possible...can their abdomen burst from that??) I like him even though I've only had him like a week, i hope i have alot of time with him!

My MM A. moderatum matured last summer and is still making sperm webs and eating. People call aphonopelmas pet rocks for a reason. Age only makes them more powerful, he will still be the centerpiece of your colection in a year.
