I live in northern Arizona and right now through Halloween is the annual tarantula migration. I picked up this guy and have him in a terrarium. He's all black except for his rump which is red/rusty color. That's his current size about an inch body without legs. I need to know species and size growth
And I would highly recommend the aforementioned A. chalcodes as a better pet species. I'M all about supporting the home team, but Marxi have a reputation for being a bit more threat-posey, and chalcodes are bigger and don't tend to mind handling.

That being said, IGNORE a lot of "first tarantula" rot on the internet. My "perfect first T" Rose Hair, for instance, would take my hand off...if she couldn't blind me first by kicking hairs! :vamp: Temperament is highly variable within a species. Best bet of all is to raise a sling who will grow up used to your handling if you want that kind of interaction. I find 1 1\2 inch chalcodes slings in the house all of the time that mature to be lovely and even tempered as adults since they grow up being handled...and fed!

@Dovey what's the best species for a beginner? I'd really love a long term pet. I've had a bearded dragon before that lived 10 years with me. I loved the whole long term thing because it allowed ultimate bonding!

@Dovey I'd love to get a larger one if I could but I have no idea what any of those names are on there! Lol! My wants now are large, docile, affordable and easy for beginners. Can you point me to a good one on the list?

I'm going to release him tomorrow when it heats up a bit. Thanks everyone for helping out! I was kinda hoping for a baby but I guess not! Lol! Anybody know where to look for a female outside? What should I look for hide wise?

@Ktbuesa Aphonopelma chalcodes (Arizona/Desert Blond) Adult size roughly 4.5", Hardy, easy to care for, VERY long lived. Very attractive T and very affordable for you because you will probably find one under a rock in your street. heheh

@KezyGLA I actually found a lady whose willing to give me either a mature male or a juvinile male desert blond. I wasn't sure temperament on those.
