He's probably been out for a bit lol. I've seen video of them emerging from communal brumation with snow still on the ground lol. You're one up on me though. I haven't been back out to the woods yet since mid-February, early March.
I was fortunate enough to see these en masse at Niagara Falls when we visited the US, although most of the locals were insisting they were "rattlesnakes"
