I googled this spider to see if it is in any way a relative to wolf spiders, I couldn't find any correlation between the two, does anyone else see the similarity, or is my lack of knowledge in spider classification to blame? I am very uneducated/inexperienced/naive pertaining to the vast world of arachnids,so basically want to know are there many spiders that look similar but are not related in anyway except by order according to taxonomic rank? Just wondering, also @Sergic thank you for sharing, awesome shot, beautiful spider! [Edit: upon further research I found that the wolf spider and dolomedes have completely different eye pattern, but don't they look so similar otherwise?]
@Dawnes1221 Fishing spiders are in the family Pisauridae, while wolf spiders are Lycosidae. I do agree that they look somewhat similar, but to me Pisauridae look more similar to Ctenidae than to Lycosids.
@Dawnes1221 They do look a little similar (fishing spiders are commonly mistaken for wolf spiders), because they are both hunting spiders with relatively robust builds.
And while they do belong to different families, they are likely related. I found this 2005 paper with a cladogram showing hypothesized evolutionary relationships between different spider families.
