She was living in the back of our mailbox and had quite a pile of dead bugs below her. Brown widows are invasive, and we normally kill them, but I didn't have the heart to kill this one, so I am keeping her in a 32-oz. deli cup.
Agreed. I would kill them too. But keeping it as a pet is essentially the same result - removing it from the natural ecosystem. It's a shame they are so invasive, they are pretty cool looking.
@darkness975 Yeah, that was my reasoning too. (I'm not going to let her breed.)
I used to find lots of black widows (L. mactans), but now all I see are brown widows. I haven't even seen a black widow in at least 3-5 years. (My last black widow picture was 6 years ago.)
@darkness975 Everywhere Latrodectus geometricus shows up, it seems to out-compete the native species. Parts of California are seeing the same thing with L. hesperus.
@Ungoliant yes I know. But I meant I am wondering if L. g. Can survive in other places or only the warmer southern places. If it cant survive in cooler climates than at least part of L. hesperus range may still be safe.
