Found this delightful little snake at our local park. My wife spotted him in the middle of the road, so we had to get him out of the way. I'm trying to figure out what he is though. I'm stuck between a really light colored Nerodia erythrogaster or a really light colored Nerodia rhombifer. Thoughts?
I'm thinking N. Erythrogaster because of that smooth plain belly and emerging pattern, but it's a little bit hard to tell when they're this size. How was its attitude? Usual water snake crankiness?
No none at all. My wife just reached down and picked him up. He squirmed just a bit at first but then he just sat there. Although, we did get a bit of mouth gaping. Still, he was by far the most docile snake I've ever found at that park.
