I happened upon a very small male cicada singing in the lowest branches of a small tree. He was about an inch long and had a long continuous vibrating call. I took a recording, but my phone's microphone couldn't handle the frequency and it just sounds like a bad synthesizer malfunction. XD
Well admittedly it's hard to say around my area. We have several different species that are considered "annual" though their technical life span is either 2 or 3 years. Other species in the area take 5-7 years to mature. Because of this, we have large numbers of at least 6 different species each year, though it's nothing compared to the members of the Periodical Cicada group that emerge every 13 or 17 years in the tens of thousands in other areas of the country. Either way I didn't recognize this one so it may not be one of our "annuals."
