"Well yeah, that, and leg IV isn't anything like gigas.
Neither is the color. Neither is the carapace. Neither is the abdomen...
It really looks nothing like gigas, at all."
To the highly experienced tarantula keeper, you're probably right. The color is similar to several H gigas photos I've seen (especially considering the range of colors they can express), as is the length of the hairs (It's certainly not furry the way a rosehair of similar color might be)... but that's besides the point, as we've already established that it can't be an H gigas. It is labeled as a 'red rump' and saying this as a person less experienced with Ts, it doesn't look like any B vagans I've ever seen. That's not to say that they don't get lighter before they need to molt, but seeing as nobody jumped out and said 'looks like a red rump!' I'm going to say it's an uncommon occurance for B vagans, or it is in fact, not a B vagans.
Joe - Thanks for the input. I have never heard of this species (but you learn something new every day). Reading up other forums with similar ID threads, it looks like a possibility. Do you know if they have a wide range of colors, tied to molting?
I wish people wouldn't make definitive identifications based solely on pictures like this... that's about as close to an H. gigas as it is to a diet coke. I'm highly doubtful of S. rubronitens as well based largely on the color, but also on the shape of the carapace.
My guess would be a Lasiodora species, but with South American terrestrials and New World terrestrials in general it can be difficult to tell, especially without a very clear photograph. I'm not in any position to critisize in this area, but is there any way you can post a clearer picture? Seeing the setae, and a better contrast on the colors would help.
