My fondest memory of our recent trip to the US was hundreds of these at Niagara Falls and everybody insisting they were rattlerst
 
My dad also found a very large Gopher Snake while in Yellowstone but neglected to actually tell us. He said everybody was also insisting that it too was a rattler
Yeah here in the states, most people in the woods are pretty clueless about what they see...lol.

Hey, look at the eagles....um, no...those are vultures.

I saw wolves...um, no, you saw coyote

Look at the frog! umm, no that's a toad

Wow,, a loon! ..umm, no, those are cormorants

Its the same here, people just think anything with 6 or more legs will kill you when in reality theres like 6 or so species out of several thousand spiders that are officially confirmed to be deadly, and only a handful that even live close to people. Same goes for our snakes, although admittedly we do have a few deadly ones that live alongside humans like Brown Snakes and Coastal Taipains
