One of my male pnigomantis fell during the molt. Really bummed out, he’s completely mangled and he definitely can’t make it to the next molt...second molting problem in less than a day and I’m starting to get discouraged about keeping mantids again.
Don’t you dare go out of the hobby again. Stuff happens and it’s not always your fault. When it happens, try try again. Plus, we all love your mantid updates! Please don’t go back out of the hobby.
@MrGhostMantis Haha I’ll try not to give up, I’m making some new enclosures right now which should hopefully reduce future mismolts. Thanks for the words of encouragement
@MrGhostMantis are you getting them from vupetstore? Good choice then! Pnigomantis are for the most part really hardy but would be best with daily mistings, same for popa spurca, although I’ve never kept them before. Also for pnigomantis since they are a larger sp. make sure to give them ample space to molt. I think this was one of the reasons why my mantis fell.
That's sad. I recently lost 2 whipspiders and it's very discouraging. But don't give up. Anyone who cares for their animals feels this way. Learn from it and improve. It's easy to blame yourself, but if you think about it, their survival rate is likely higher than in the wild. Thanks for posting, and sorry for your loss.
@Gnarled Gnome thanks for the encouraging words; I got some better enclosures for them so hopefully I can prevent any future mismolts. Sorry about your tailless whiplings; were they your adults? How are yours doing so far?
@mantisfan101 An adult male medius and a small unsexed barbadensis. The rest seem to be doing well. The medius had been showing signs of senescence so I expected it but it was still sad. The barby wasn't eating but didnt seem thin, so it was a surprise. Still expecting the diadema babies.
I wholeheartedly agree with @MrGhostMantis. It would cripple the legs out from under you to know how many roach molts have gone bad for me. Even in the most favorable conditions where breeding pairs are giddy and getting gross. This is either a learning mistake, or just the cosmic roll of the dice. We aren't gene editing them yet. AND even if we were there would be mistakes. Take your lumps and learn from them. That's really all you can do.
