I swear that I had read somewhere that these guys are supposed to be docile, but true to her name, Kitty came at me claws out when I rehoused her today. Charged the tongs and bit the decor as I was removing it lmao.
@JavaJacketOC She definitely looks overdue for one, so I'm hoping she will soon, but the bald spots on her abdomen haven't darkened up to indicate premolt. I'm actually pretty sure her initial charge was a feeding response, but her biting the décor was definitely defensive. I think this specimen just may be a bit more testy in temperament, as my male isn't defensive in the slightest; just very skittish.
Yeah, I have never seen defensiveness, but all mine are pretty skittish for sure...but great eaters.
This is, in terms of looks, a very Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde tarantula. After a molt they are absolutely beautiful, bright and velvety with great contrasting colors....then as they near the next molt, they start looking raggity and beat up, and really look just awful .
@cold blood Guess I just have a moody individual, then. Hearing the crunch from that plastic plant made me VERY glad my fingers weren't anywhere nearby.
Definitely agree on that sentiment - she looks rough as hell with that patchy browned-out appearance, but when they molt and those velvety blacks are nice and fresh with that fiery red carapace nearly luminescent because it's so bright, they're honestly one of my favorite Ts aesthetically. I also dig the vaguely true spider mygalomorph-esque build they got going on.
