I am curious because my mother found a large spider in her basement (sadly she killed it instead of calling me to go and get it in order to bring it back home with me).
Could be anything from a cellar spider to a common house spider. From my personal experience (not saying everyone is like this) females who are not in the hobby tend to over exaggerate the size of spiders.
I lived in north west Indiana for 12 years and never saw anything large there
Large spiders occasionally found in Indiana homes: dark fishing spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus, and large wolf spider species, i.e., Tigrosa aspersa, T. georgicola, and T. helluo.
