They're mostly sets sites for the attachment of muscles, and like the exoskeleton are part of the body wall, though the exoskeleton is an infolding of it. The cephalothorax has a piece that seems to do something different, and the abdomen has a piece that used to attach to muscles (I bet it still does in earlier arachnids, especially scorpions).
