P.murinus Breeding attempt

This is the first time breeding this species, so far I must say it has been successful on the mating part. We'll have to see how it goes from there...

The tempertature where the breeding occured was a little over 75 degrees farenheit. I bought a newly acquired 4.75 (approx size) female P.murinus from Ken The Bug Guy, and placed her in new set up, a large Kritter Keeper. I allowed her to get comfortable in her new enclosure for around 2 days. I introduced my mature male that I had acquired 2 weeks prior, to see if anything would occur. I practically placed the male on the side of the female's enclosure directly above her. He began to drum within 5 minutes of introduction. He gently nudged her and kept drumming on her. She started to move away and he followed her like a puppy dog. They ventured on the outside of the KK. Constant drumming on the male's part for about the next 10 minutes. Finally she began to drum back, and granted him permission. He managed to make a good insertion with one pedipalp. He attempted again, and she granted him access again but quickly changed his mind and had to break them up. On her own she ventured back inside of her Kritter Keeper and hid. I will attempt to breed them again too ensure a successful breeding.

P. murinus, Log, Pics, and Video

Here is my female.

Here are the two males. Thanks Matt K!

5/19/08
I placed one male inside the female's cage but once he touched the females web he crawled back into the little plastic container I transported him in and didn't move. I removed him and placed the 2nd male into the females container. Once this male touched the females web he started searching for her. They went through an awesome courtship full of vibrating and drumming. After mating they backed away from each other. I removed the male and the female kept searching for him around the cage before returning to rest in the corner. I posted some pics and a video of the cortship and mating below. You can see a closeup of pedipalp insertion in the video. I'd fullscreen it. A little shaky in a few spots but not too bad.

I placed the male that didn't mate yesterday in with the female. Today he wasn't shy and did his thing. Here are a few shots.

After I took the male out the female laid on her back for quite awhile.

Two more attempts made.
Second attempt: Insertions were not seen, but could have been done.
Third attempt: Both pedipalps inserted, but the female decided to get violent and I had to break them up.

I will attempt again in the following weeks until she is not receptive or I fail to save the male's life for future breeding.

Another successful mating today. I placed one of the males in with the female again tonight. After 2 times of successful insertions the female attacked the male and chased him around the cage as if she was going to have a snack. I removed him and no damage was seen on either tarantula. She will be well fed before either male is introduced again.

Update. My most recent two attempts I believe are to be my last... the male attempted to coax the female into mating but she completely ignored him so I have my fingers crossed that she is gravid.

Things are looking good so far. She hasn't left her den and I can see that she is fattening up quickly. Male is still around and wandering... Keeping my fingers crossed!

Successful.

This is my largest OBT eggsac yet. Here are the stats for the set up, though with these species it doesn't seem to matter what you do.

My reptile/spider room is kept between 80 and 85 degrees.

The female molted 5/23/09

Mating happened with 2 males on the following dates: 6/3/09, 6/25/09 7/7/09, 7/26/09, 8/1/09

Eggs were laid 8/22/09

Hatched 9/15/09

141 slings!

This was her first eggsac and she is not particularly large. I was a bit surprised by the number of slings I pulled out of her cages yesterday.

I couldn't edit it after the fact, so I needed to add that more slings were found in the cage. One of them was found as recent as 10/10/2009 bringing the total count up to 146 slings (145 since one died before molting to 2nd instar).

My first eggsac! WHOOO!!!

Left the sac with the female for 23 days and decided to pull it early to give incubating a shot.

Everything was kept at room temperature, low 80's to mid 70's. around 70-80% humidity.

I currently have 106 healthy eggs with legs. I will follow up with a final count when I see who makes it to sling mode. :)

Double Clutch with 4 fertile eggs.

Both male and female were kept in similar conditions. Humid cages with a cork hide. Food was offered weekly and water dishes were changed weekly.
