B. vagans would be the ideal spider id suggest to a virgin owner... They grow faster than other Brachys, arent as motionless and pretty active, and generally pretty calm. Id recommend a juvie/subadult as IME slings are kinda flighty.
My B. vagans is super active, in fact it's probably the most active of all of my little guys. Great beginner

For me i had no interest in them until i recieved one as a freebie... easily one of my best slings to just sit and watch.

I hear you man. There is an Avic sitting in a sorry looking little critter keeper at my local Petsmart that I am *very* tempted to rescue. I refrain from doing it though because I'm not sure if I'm up to the task of an arboreal just yet. I really don't want to encourage their poor husbandry, and even if I were to get an arboreal I'm sure it wouldn't be an Avic. Not that there is anything wrong with them, I just think I would be quicker to get a Psalmopoeus cambridgei.

Here are some awesome sources for T's online:

Hey! You forgot me if I ever decide on when to sell tarantulas. But seriously though Avicularia avicularia is a fine first starter tarantula. I keep reading that not having enough ventilation is the cause of death for Avicularia species can't say I have that problem. Anyone can be up to the task of taking care of an Avicularia species.

Every pumpkin patch tarantula is a direct decendant of Houdini, with more honed skills.

All slings will scavenge for prekilled food. For most NW slings i prekill since theyre usually timid with live prey. My OW slings are ferocious eaters and have no problems with live prey.

In this enclosure there really isn't enough ventilation for my Avicularia sp. "Ecuador" she has been living in this enclosure for the last two years dry substrate no misting, just a good old cork bark and a water dish and she is as happy as can be with lots of webbing. Avicularia species aren't hard to keep alive they are a very simple genus to take care of.
Of course as babies you do need to keep them humid that's for sure.
I do hated when they poop on the glass always have to clean it up.

I usually wait a week before trying to feed. When you get the new substrate, I would put a fake plant/leaves in there as well. It gives them more cover and anchor points for webbing.

If that's how the enclosure is set up - change it.

Avicularia spp. prefer tight spots and while you have that corkpiece in there, the majority of the cage is open terrain so to speak. You can either put in real or plastic plants to fill out those open areas and make them look prettier, too. Then, there's the thing with those cages in regard to the mesh-top. It's a possible danger to the T and while it does happen seldomly I've always been of the opinion why risk it? The animal can get stuck with its tarsal-claws in the mesh and in the worst case rip off its own legs trying to free itself. It can get chewed through effectively having a T on the lose in return. Most importantly though - it'll have all the humidity that is being provided by a waterdish evaporate into nothingness, causing the cage to be drier than needed for an Avic. Yes, it's a lot of ventilation, but it's better to having that one each side of an enclosure for an arboreal like an Avic.
