Hi all,

thinking about getting in to scorpion keeping going to have a 3ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft glass fish tank spare soon and was after some advice about what kinds i can keep in them was thinking making the tank into 3 different tanks using deviders and try going for same heat requirements ect was thinking a desert hairy, asian forest, emperor 1 in each tank so each would have a 1ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft tank or even only go for 2 tanks to make more floor space. For heating i was thinking of running heating cable along the bank of the tank require some advice on how to do this for best results and making 2 lids out of the plastic lids (tank has its own wooden lid) to add abit more escape proof, any advice would be great been reading care sheets but would like adivce from owners on here before i go ahead with anything.

cheers

That would work, but the humidity might be harder to control because you have 2 forest scorpions and 1 desert scorpion next to a humid tank.

You could also save yourself some time/money and make it one huge Emperor colony.

You're better off going with all desert species or all forest species. 1ft x 1.5ft is enough space for one adult Desert Hairy or Emperor or Asian Forest scorpion. If you don't partition the tank, it could hold 4 or perhaps 5 adult Emperors or AFSs. Desert Hairys don't do well when kept communally. All three species require 6 to 8 inches of substrate--moist coco fiber for the two forest species and packed dry sand (with clay as a binder) for the Desert Hairy. If you go with 3 Desert Hairy partitions, expect your tank to weigh 100lbs and take 2 to 3 weeks to dry (the sand/clay mixture needs to be moistened, packed and allowed to dry in order to hold burrows). If you go with either of the two forest species, consider using a false bottom to keep moisture in the substrate.

Scorpions can't climb glass but you should still have a secure fitting top. Be sure any partitions in the tank are sealed with silicon along the sides and bottom and fit tightly against the top. Rather than heat cable, you might consider Flexwatt heat mat or an overhead IR lamp.

Good luck and welcome to the hobby.
