Just got my first centipede, Scolopendra angulata. Super hyped! Sorry for the bad picture, more pictures of this species will be posted on my Instagram next weekend. Thanks for looking!
Also, below are some socialization pictures. When I got the centipede it ran across the enclosure very fast and would freak out when I touched it. After working with the pede for about an hour, it calmed down so much. Very happy with this purchase.
Lucky you. I'm still trying to calm down my rubripes. There's evidence of some progress, but I'm still sure I'd get envenomated if I freehandled it. At the moment, I'm limited to touching the head while it's eating. Anyway, I'm sure you'll love your new pede, they're some of the most underrated inverts out there.
Haha! I understand now why people think centipedes are evil monsters, it's because they've only seen S. subspinipes. You can't even open the lid to mine without them running away or rearing up.
Lovely centipede, and so glad you can hold and interact with it. Try hand-feeding!
...I would love to get a pet I can actually touch without getting, like, eaten.
Day 2 of socialization: Tried using a technique seen by ThePureLife by holding the centipedes underside and top while rubbing its back. About 30 minutes was spent after work doing this.
Day 3 of socialization: letting it crawl on hand. Talk about an adrenaline rush haha. Through the process I remained calm and everything went smooth. Love this new addition!
Great work! I'm going to take the plunge with my E. rubripes tomorrow. After tomorrow, I will be finishing the last of this term's exams - if I do get envenomated, I don't fancy sitting an exam with a centipede bite on my hand.
I often wonder if it's a bio chemical type thing where they learn a hand is safe over time through a sensory/ chemical memory means. Hope that makes sense.
