made an arboreal indian stick insect, but can i use the background to secure plants

i have the exo terra palludarium 30x 30x 60 and i have indian stick insects in it, but i was thinking if i could make small holes in the styrofoam background to put the stem of ivy (herdera)
into the holes. because i am struggeling too find good spots to make it so they have food high up, can i make holes?
