I can imagine the european widow are living in citys like the northamerican or australian species of Latrodectus. So look under old wood, or other suitable places. Ask the locals if the know.

The chance of lethality from L.m.tredecimguttatus is slightly less than with L. mactans, but the muscle cramping is more severe. L.mactans tredecimguttatus is confirmed to be in Croatia ( see article: http://www.millennium-debate.org/suntel31aug03.htm ).

Other species in southern Europe include:

L. hystrix
L. dahli
L. pallidus

According to Platnick the only Latrodectus in Europe are tredecimguttatus and L. lilianae (in Spain). The ones listed above are middleeastern species, but they might have a larger distribution area.

Alex, they are kept as mactans or hesperus as far as I know.
