Yes. I usually just go by the size and shape of the final segment though.

I have a hard time counting them sometimes, and prefer just waiting too. Beautiful Mantis. Do you breed orchids, or just have the one?

These guys are easily sexed at the third instar. Females have a cleft on the subgenital plate and males do not.
Counting the segments can be unreliable since earlier instars have the same number of segments--the last few fuse together and are modified in the female as they molt and grow to form the ovipositor.
