I figured I'd start a thread where I would post insect species I have in my collection for others to see. If you want to share what you have in your collection feel free to post some pics.

The first few I'm posting are the species of stage beetles I have. I currently have three of the four species in the genus Lucanus in the U.S. These are large and impressive beetles that always attract attention.

Species: Lucanus elaphus
Location: North Carolina

Species: Lucanus placidus

Good luck collecting the 4th Lucanus! I've only got two species in my collection so far.

Thanks, now that I live in the general area where the last species (Lucanus mazama) is found, hopefully I can get out and get one.

Everything in my collection either I collected myself or my friends and family caught them for me. Most of what I have I caught myself though.

Most of my collection I caught myself or at one time had kept alive, but my more exotic specimens were bought dried or given to me by my grandparents.

I've been doing some work on my collection. Finally finishing putting labels on my Arkansas 2016 material in the tub and the white boxes are full of my Colorado 2017 material that I still have to make labels for, needles to say I have a full workload the next week or so. But gotta get everything ready for the upcoming collecting season (i.e figuring out how much space I currently have and my total specimen count). DSC00869.JPG

One of the many reasons why I love studying insects is their ability for great variation within a single species. The grasshoppers here are all Arphia conspersa, a species of band winged grasshopper (Oedipodinae). Different populations can have different wing colors and even individuals within a single population can have different wing colors. I was able to find all the various wing colors...from left to right is Pink, Yellow, Orange, and Red. DSC00871.JPG

Got better lighting and a easier way to edit my photos. I've spent the whole weekend doing pictures.

Today marked my first milestone in my collection...I have reached 10,000 specimens. Thankfully the insect that hit that number was a photogenic one.

My mature female creobroter gemmatus died a week ago and so I decided to prepare her. It was a very small Mantis so this isn't my best work but I still love the colors. Resized_20180312_201705_6843.jpeg

Here is an underside of one of my Agraulis vanillae (Gulf Fritillary)

I really love the coloring of this species and the orange and silver can really pop 27993756_10215638334332465_434619053782462076_o.jpg
