Sure most tropical phasmids wouldn't survive the cold and make it to the next year to invade but look at the spotted lanternfly. Somehow they are surviving much colder winters than tests say their eggs can. For all we know a species could oviposit somewhere sheltered and then you have an unexpectedly adaptable pest.
