I've always noticed that every 2-4 years, for 1 night, a giant , what i call "moth storm" will occure. There are hundreds if not thousands of moths in every place in my village, and i've seen it happen only twice now. One was 6-7 years ago, and the other one just 2-3 years ago. Is there any scientific explaination or name for that moth migration? Since i recently got into moths, i would like to know every when it occures, so maybe ill get a chance to catch some very rare species.

Sounds like gypsy moths, but without pictures it's only a guess. Location?

The mass emergence of adult moths coincides with adundant food for larvae, mild weather, lack of predators, and low mortality in general. Ideal conditions may only be present every few years. Several species of Lepidoptera exhibit this "boom and bust" cycle.

Don't know, never really bothered till now, and since it happened, it's been 3 years. I only remember it being medium sized and greyish
