I'm glad someone pulled this thread up again. I read something last night that answered my own questions re: juddering in a territorial sense. It seems that juddering is a male-only activity that is used soely in a mating context. It is used to announce gender and pacify the female. It is not, incidentaly, used to differentiate between species (as is the case with tapping in Ts).
