I am new to this site. It looks awesome so far. So here's my dumb questions. How do I send somebody personal messages? Do I have to follow them? What's the deal with the points? Does it help me get upgraded from arachnopeon to a different level name? Thanks to whoever can help me get started.

No, that depends on how many posts you have. You can have a custom title if you become an Arachnosupporter. More information about that here. Take special note about the Active Member status, that'll answer other questions you may have.
