they seem to be good at hiding from predators
anyone else have the same observation?

No, but I hear they burrow which is preventing me from starting a colony.

If the T allows dubia to burrow, it could mean that you over feed the T. If you only feed once every week or every other week, they should almost always get eaten. My Ts would always find the dubias no matter where they hide.

If it doesn't get eaten, then you should remove it from the container and try again the following week. And stop feed when the T shows sign of premolt.

Just crush the head o_O It's a good habit to have with any feeder anyway

Dubia roaches simply will not burrow with a crushed head, and they will live for days even after the injury. On top of that, feeders should have their mouth-parts destroyed before introduction to your specimen's enclosure.

If crushing heads makes you squeamish, note that mature male dubias will never attempt to burrow. They just run around.
