Hi,
I would like to know which species of land crab (except Birgus latro) is the biggest?
I read a lot about it, but I don't find answer. Cardisoma sp., like C. armatum and guanhumi can reach about 20 cm wide of carapace. Did you hear any bigger species? On some sites I read that Gecarcinus quadratus can reach 25 cm wide, but I don't know if this information is true.
Regards

I've always read that the maximum carapace size for G. quadratus is 10cm, I doubt it can reach anything like 25cm. My guess would be a Cardisoma species, but I don't really know.

About G. quadratus which can reach 25 cm wide; http://www.panzerwelten.de/forum/archive/index.php?thread-1636.html
Difference between 10 (more common) and 25 cm is huge, it is quite strange that these crabs could be so big.
Other interesting issue is, why Cardisoma species grow up to 20 cm wide in nature, but in captivity their final size is twice smaller? I know, maximum size is only for small number of individuals, but why this difference is so big. Do you have any ideas?
