As stated for your next attempt make sure the tank is cycled. Betta fish Breath from the surface so an air stone is not required. Live plants can help to keep the water parameters stable. I have my guy in a 2.5 gallon tank at work. Every few weeks I drain about half the water and clean algae off the tank. Sorry to hear you lost yours, they are usually tough as nails.
