ant hunting blues

well i just have the worst luck with ants. first the imported red fire ant queen i spent 3 hours getting out of a log escaped her enclosure that night, then i flipped a rock disconvering a harvester and colony with the queen right on the rock! but when i went to sweep her into a container she fell off the rock and somehow dissapeared. it looks like i just have bad ant luck. when the fire ants make their nuptual flight ill probably be out with a fever or something... egh.

Was the fire ant queen inside when it escaped from the enclosure?

Those things scare the hell out of me, the first time I was in AZ I stepped on a nest and got a few nasty stings on my legs.

it was in its enclosure on my dresser. i doubt ill ever see her or her children in my room, though. fire ants can be mean but their killing power would make them very interesting to keep, i think. i kept some workers last year and they would tear through bugs.
