Your results could be skewed if you're buying the larger options online.

When one tarantula in my collection molts, I know all of the others are about to molt too. They always molt within a few days of one another. I got them all from different places, they're all different sizes, and different species but still molt at roughly the same time.
I bought a flightless fruit fly colony for it. I don't think its settled in enough yet to be interested in food. I might throw in a small cricket leg and see if it scavenges.
