Thanks for all the compliments. It took a little work to get the spider out without destroying the burrow 8) After a while she just bulldogged the twig I was using and held on. Once I had her near the top of the burrow I used another twig and very gently nudged her from behind. It took a lot of...
Atypus snetsingeri has only been collected from two places in Landsdowne as far as I know a local park and a piece of private property. On the private property most of the spiders were found along the foundation of the house and in a hedge. In the park they were found in a small strip of woods...
Thanks for the compliments. Sphodros niger can be found pretty far north, all the way to southern Canada. In Pennsylvania a really cool species can be found, Atypus snetsingeri. It has only been collected from the town of Landsdowne and is the only Atypus species in the US. I have been thinking...
I am curious about this method of rearing spiderlings. Do the spiders make burrows in the shredded towels? Does anyone have any pictures of the set ups? How are the spiderlings doing?

Bobby
Here a few photos that I shot last new years when I visited Torrey Pines State Park in San Diego. These were very abundant there. After I was able to coax the spider out for the pictures I put it back in the burrow. The pictures were with my film slr and had to be scanned, so the quality isn't...
Hello all. Here are a few more pictures from my terrarium.
After being introduced to my terrarium a few weeks ago this fat little girl has done much work on her tube.
I was able to snap a few shots of her grabbing a meal worm. The view of her feeding is better than usual because she...
the project with the california condor hasn't been very successful and it is pure irresponsibility to let a species get to that state. "Reseeding" an area wouldbe terribly difficult as well. First you would have to identify the areas to focus on, get government permission, breed the spiders on a...
Stefan, yes it has been quite a while. Graduate school, running, and work take up way to much of my time. Such is life.
Those are very good rules that everyone should follow when thinking about purchasing a wild caught spider. Unfortunately I believe that many people just want to have...
Hello everyone. I just wanted to pose a question to everyone. Does anyone here get little pangs of guilt when they purchase wild caught spiders? I ask this in this forum because so many of the spiders that we all love are not commonly bred (if at all) in captivity. My personal favorites...
The lid for the terrarium is a glass sheet a half inch shorter than the terrarium. This keeps the humidity levels pretty high. It is not normally as wet as in the pictures. It was misted prior to me taking them.

Bobby
Thank you everyone for your compliments. I am really enjoying this setup and I believe the spiders are too. I am glad you enjoyed the videos. I hope to get some that are of better quality. I will share them when I do.
@Froggyman- Both of these spiders were collected in the Kentucky section of...

I took this little video of my Sphodros niger tonight. I saw her working on her tube so I thought she might be interested in some food. I was right. I was hoping that her fangs would have come through the front. Next time maybe.

Hello everyone. I certainly haven't been on here in a while. It looks like I have missed some pretty interesting threads. I have a few new pictures as well as a video to share with everyone. The pictures are of my terrarium that started off being just for plants but now two of my spiders have...
That is an awesome find! What bike path is it? You should report your sighting to the DNR or the county wildlife biologist. they are quite rare up here. It is also Sphodros niger. S.atlanticus is only in the southern part of the state. Is palatine in lake county by the way?
peace,
Bobby
Sorry to hear about your losses Stefan. On the upside though the females look beautiful and very massive. I just lost my only male d.triton the other day. SO my breeding project has gone down the tubes. Hopefully your boys can finish the race.
peace,
Bobby
I know that a lot of the sellers label these as "hot" but i was just wondering if anyone has seen any of the hard evidence. I mean trapdoors are very aggressive and it would probably hurt like hell to be bit but is it really any more serious than a wasp sting? Has anyone here been bit? Anyways...
Sounds like you have a pretty good collection of Kenyans there! I know what you are saying about wishing the other species were more available. The next species that I think I will try will be E. johnii, if I can get my hands on a couple.
peace,
Bobby
I checked the 1980 Gertsch and Platnick paper and at the time of the article none of the Sphodros species had been collected in Iowa. Iowa does seem to be in the range of S.niger and S.fitchi though. I wouldn't be surprized ifsome have popped up since that paper.
peace,
Bobby
