Most savannahs calm down as they get older. Even if you do no different than you're doing now, chances are good that they'll mellow out. If they don't, you'll just have to live with it. There are worse things.
White/black throats are Varanus albigularis. These were formerly considered V...
Try thinking of it as a feathery dinosaur with no teeth. ;) I like birds, but I haven't had one for years. I'm sure I'll get another one someday, when I've got my own house. I've always loved mynahs, but they're tons of work.

If ruling out what she bought it as (B. emilia) on the basis of the patellae being the wrong color qualifies as a "GUESS", then I'm interested in knowing what's not a guess. Whether or not it's smithi, it's certainly not what she paid for, and I can't see it being anything but smithi or possibly...
Annoyed? ;) I have half a dozen B. smithi, and I'm convinced that's not enough. A few years ago I cut down on the number of species I had and got more of the ones I kept, and it turned out to be a great move. I never realized the fun I was missing.

Same here. It's nothing to worry about at this point.
As for the "final molt" bit, no. If it were an ultimate male you'd know it, and with a female there is no final molt in a developmental sense; you don't know which molt is the final one until the spider kicks the bucket. ;)

There's no need to consider the carapace coloration; B. emilia has uniformly dark patellae. That trait alone makes it easy to distinguish from the other "red legs".

Good god. You're a pro at cramming illogical bs into a short email.
I'm baffled by all the creative, unreliable and gruesome methods for killing rodents that have been suggested here. There are dependably humane and clean ways of doing it that require very little cash or effort. Why don't...
Or put another way: no. At least not compared to what they were a few years ago. I can remember $1200 ackies, so $200 is a steal by comparison. Yes, more expensive than a beardie, but not that expensive in the grand scheme of reptilian things.
Steve
Beautiful T, whatever it is. I have a female Grammostola alticeps that's a spitting image of yours, color-wise; not a guess as to the ID of yours, but that genus would be one to consider. My guess in any case is that your spider was a steal. ;)

Nice spider, Dave.
You ought to offer your services to a theraphosid taxonomist or two; it would save them the trouble of actually having to examine anything, leaving them more time for frisbee. Taxonomists love frisbees.

If the light tent is configured properly it really wont matter if the background is posterboard or substrate, unless you're looking to illuminate things like the undersides of the legs. One thing I wonder, though, is whether white board would reflect enough light onto the lower surfaces of an...
I used to do it this way, but it's got disadvantages to the human and the mouse. The extremeties freeze much faster than the rest of the animal, which makes it a painful way to die. I switched methods on this basis alone. Another potential problem occurs when freezing multiple animals. The...
