    Is this normal?

I've used the following trick to get Haplopelmas to burrow, and it works great; Poke a few holes in the bottom of the container and "bottom soak" the substrate by letting the container sit in an inch or two of water for a while. Then let the top of the container dry out. Your H. lividium...

    do obts dart?

LOL- that must have been entertaining :D Was it settled in with a tube web? I've had that happen to me with P. cambridgei and H. maculatus. The Mac actually bit a fold in my sleeve, and that was the closest I've come to a bad bite so far. I've had recently rehoused OBT's bolt twice, but...

    hopefully not a hybrid.

Cody- As I mentioned in another thread we are going to be neighbors in a couple of months. I have a large female that I am certain (as anyone in the hobby can be) is a pure B. albopilosum. You are welcome to take a look at her when I get settled in for a close up comparison with yours. I'd...

    My slings like fishfood...

Excellent! I have a few pounds of high end pellet foods in the freezer and a booming colony of mealworms. I think once I get settled in I'll try adding them to some some mashed crickets and roaches and see what I can concoct. I'll add pics and feedback directly to this thread! Scott

    do obts dart?

OBT's will dart when startled, but darting out of the enclosure is only a temporary problem. Once they web up a retreat, any disturbance will send them straight down into it...

    My slings like fishfood...

Let me know what kind of results you get. Looks like I'm moving again in April, so I'll start experimenting with this when I get settled in. Anything I make now will be getting thrown away in a few weeks...

    My slings like fishfood...

Another option for doing this on a larger scale would be stealing another aquarium based idea: Homemade gel food cubes: Start with powdered gelatin as a binding agent. Mix up some different fish flakes and even an assortment of crushed up insects. You then mix it into the gelatin, freeze...

    How to properly "powerfeed"

I tend to agree. Keeping them "well fed" as I mentioned in my previous post is my preferred term. Do I see a foie gras thread coming? :D

what have you done in this hobby?

If it happens after mid April, count me in. A job offer I couldn't refuse has me moving to Springfield, MO in about six weeks. To the OP, and anyone else who cares. I've been working on collecting information on US native tarantulas, which seem under appreciated in the hobby, and under...

    A. versi bad molt?

You're welcome. It's never fun when it does happen.... I had a 1" B. smithi of all things split it's exo while standing upright, and didn't move again. Just stood there and died in the ICU. Strange stuff can happen with slings from time to time :?

    How to properly "powerfeed"

I keep my sling shelf a bit warmer and make sure they have plenty to eat. As others mentioned, I like to get slings up to about the 2" mark ASAP. They become much less likely to have problems at this point. After that it's room temps and weekly feeds for all non breeders. Let's try and keep...

    A. versi bad molt?

If you already have it in an ICU there is pretty much nothing more you can do but wait. One element of the ICU that you didn't mention in your original post was warmth. You might to find a spot where it can get some "gentle" heat, like a warm spot on top of your fridge or something...

    Question on L. parahybana

Thanks for the replies. It seems like mine is not acting unusually, which was my main concern. I'll add a potted plant or two and keep the rest of the enclosure on the dry side...

    Question on L. parahybana

I have a few of these growing out, with the largest being about 4". I'm going to need to move it into a more permanent enclosure soon. I know that this species does not require the humidity of T. blondi, but mine seems to hate damp substrate. I don't recall anyone having this problem, and see...

    purely Lateralis roaches

One of the best things about roaches is the great variety of foods they eat. Mix up their diet with a lot of different fruits, veggies and healthy leftovers and they will have a wider nutritional profile...

    Science behind Sp " Burgundy"

I purchased two from your 2007 sac and they were among the ones I lost when my moving truck broke down. I thought I coudn't be any more upset, but have been proven wrong

    Vent hole size???

Yup- Doesn't matter how you do it, as long as the ventilation is there. Sounds like a plan to me ;) Scott

    Vent hole size???

The hole you are proposing will be fine. I would still drill a few small holes near the bottom so there is some cross ventilation. You don't need to go crazy. A row or two along the back will not detract from the look of the cube, and P. irminia slings will be in the bottom half 90% of the...
