Comment by 'purevl' in media 'ID me please'

It looks to me like an H. maculata (which does come from Africa).

    The exterminator is coming soon.

I wouldn't worry too much. My apartment complex also sprays every now & then like yours (around the doors, around the edge of kitchen & edge of bathroom). If I'm home when they come by I refuse entry & go about my day but more than once I've come home to find a note on my counter saying that...

    Penultimate?

Not quite. Since penultimate is one molt before maturing any mature male is past that stage & is no longer penultimate, he's just mature. Think of penultimate as being on the cusp of puberty while mature is post puberty.

Cage type to see burrowers more??

The only thing I've seen for helping someone see a burrow is to get two cages, one a little smaller than the other. Put the smaller cage upside down in the center of the larger cage & fill the area betweeen them with substrate. This prevents the spider from burrowing in the center to never be...

    Avic sling tips

Dry substrate, lots of cross-ventilation, cork to chill on, lots of leaves for web anchor points, water bowl, & do NOT mist the enclosure.

    Avic sp. Columbia

Ah, thanks. I knew it was undescribed, just didn't know that meant it was still considered a common name. Was thinking that since it was as close as we could come right now to a scientific name that it would be considered its current scientific name.

    Avic sp. Columbia

How is that a common name? It's a genus/species name that just hasn't been fully classified. A common name would be like "Colombian green pinktoe" or something.

    Avic sp. Columbia

Yeah? Find me a map from anywhere that has it spelled Columbia.

    Avic sp. Columbia

It seems that the species name for this tarantula comes from the country in South America where it was found. However that country name is spelled Colombia, not Columbia. Does anybody know...was the misspelling of the country name done for a specific purpose or is it just a side effect of...

    Articles Search

How is asking for copies of articles having someone do your homework for you? He didn't ask for synopses of the articles or for someone to write a paper, he just asked if anyone knew where he could get copies. How is asking here any different than going to a library & asking if they knew where...

    Irminia sack

98 days? My math says 7 weeks is only 49 days, still longer than the 21 to get EWLs but nowhere near 98. Is time between mating & creating the egg sac counted or something? I've not done any breeding so don't know if there are extra days to be added.

Newbie waiting on her first Ts in the mail!

If most newbies NEVER do a bite report...how do you know all these supposed bites are happening?

Can you keep a species too dry?

Thanks for all the replies, gives me some stuphs to think about. Let me add one clarification that I should have put in the original post...all my Ts have water bowls as soon as their enclosures are large enough for one so I'm not talking about a totally dry cage with no access to water. I'm...

Can you keep a species too dry?

At first that sounds like a rather stupid question but there is some reasoning behind it. Lots of times when there is a "Help, my T is stuck in a molt" thread someone suggests taking the cage into the bathroom while a hot shower is happening to increase the humidity & help the spider molt...

Illegal to own tarantulas in Florida

Not sure how much faith I'd put into that email. According to the website, FDACS is run by Commisioner Adam H. Putnam, not Greg Hodges. The only Dr. Greg Hodges I can find relating to anything arthropod-wise is the Curator of Coccinea and Aleyrodidae at the Florida State Collection of...

    T sizes for gallon containers?

What are the dimensions of said containers? Short but wide? Tall but narrow? We'll need to know how big the containers are before we can suggest an appropriate sized T for it.

    Peruvian Avicularia

Wikipedia lists these... Avicularia ancylochira (Mello-Leitão, 1923) — Brazil, the Peruvian Red Stripe Pinktoe, Peruvian Red And Black Pinktoe, Peruvian Monochromatic Pinktoe - lists Brazil as locale but common name is Peru so might be there as well? Avicularia aurantiaca (Bauer, 1996) — Peru...

Bought a New Vivarium for my T: Some Questions

What is the height of the walls on that thing & how high is the center peak above the height of the walls? I'm thinking the peaked roof may make it a difficult enclosure to get the substrate depth correct. Since your T is terrestrial, the distance from substrate to ceiling shouldn't be much...
