wow! i had no idea H. maculata was known for long periods between molts. i got a 1/4 inch sling about 5 months ago and has molted 3 times and is in premolt rite now. my sling is a super feeder, loves lateralis.
i find em here in so cal all the time. they like to burrow in loose soil. they have a nickel sized hole to the opening of the burrow. lift up logs or rocks around moist areas. gnarly little guys.
i would switch to a dark color tub. dark, warm and moist is the key. i dont know if it makes any difference but i get apple/avocado/pear crates from the super market, they are made of the same pulp as egg crates and they are free, just ask the produce guys. good luck

its a male B. dubia nymph. blaberus nymphs look alot like the one pictured but have more orange sploches. you can tell male by the last segment of the abdomen on the underside.
i completely agree with the magnifying glasses. i spent 3.99 for a set of 5 eye loupes ( the kind jewelers use that can be held in one eye) they fit perfectly over the lenses of my camera. i can get completely unreal shots by stacking a 10x on a 7x for a total of 70x magnification.
