I was in a zoology practical and the lecturer mentioned that we'd be focusing on spiders in the next practical, and that she'd be bringing some of her tarantulas for us to handle. I started thinking about owning my own tarantula and did some research. Anyway, after doing a lot of reading and...
I read an article a while back about someone who positioned his dead spiders and then put them in the freezer for a few months (around 5 if I remember correctly) to let the moisture sublimate. I don't know if it worked or not, but the person said that there isn't usually a smell with insects...
I have also frozen and thawed out feeders for smaller slings. It seemed to work quite well with mealworms, and it made them easier to cut into pieces while frozen.
At least it has moulted now and seems to be returning to normal. I had a Brachypelma albopilosum male lose both fangs about a month after moulting and I was convinced he wouldn't make it to the next moult, but he did.
I am really sorry to hear about your tarantula. She had such nice colouration too.
For future reference, would the method of lubricating the scab earlier on (as in before waste has been able to build up) be likely to work? So removing it regularly to allow waste to be removed without letting it...
I think it would be a lot like being trapped in really tight skinny jeans that you aren't allowed to take off, and then one day you're allowed to take them off and put on a pair that actually fits. Magically your jeans disappear so that someone can determine what gender you are. Then you walk...
I like the site that plays the audio with the pronunciation. Although I always thought that Poecilotheria was pronouned pee-see-lo-theria, rather than poec-i-lo-theria.
You could stretch the feeds out a bit so that they aren't being fed every 2 days, but rather 5 or so. How big are the crickets that you're feeding? I feed my slings every 5 days if they'll take it, and I use crickets just over half the size of the spider (I crush the head slightly to give the...
The tank size will depend on the size of the spider. You don't want to put a tiny sling into a huge tank, rather keep it in smaller plastic containers and rehouse it as it outgrows them.
Coco fiber is a popular option, and can be used.
As a general rule, if the temperatures are comfortable for...
To be honest my dad tends to buy most of mine (weird family dynamic going on with my siblings and all), although we haven't splurged on any one expensive spider. The most expensive one was a Lampropelma violaceopes female for R650 (about $65). Fortunately most spiders are quite cheap here. I...
That site also appears to sell handy packs of smaller quantities (such as 30 large or 50 medium crickets). If your current tarantulas are big enough you can feed them large crickets, and not end up with 250. You could then freeze any excess if need be, provided that your tarantulas scavenge...
Based on the new pictures I'd also say possibly in pre-moult. The bald patch looks somewhat dark, but not absolutely dark as I would expect. If it gets darker in the coming days you could be looking at an imminent moult.
