Yes, this was pure carelessness on my part. I am usually very careful about not getting near my spiders and never handle them. I am not sure what possessed me to have my finger anywhere near the spider when I was feeding it.
Just a small addendum. Around the area where the incision was there are a number of small red dots. Under magnification, they seem to be under the skin and contain blood.
Last Saturday I was feeding my Ts and through my own fault got too close to my 4 inch G pulchripes just as it was going for a cricket. It managed to get its fang into my index finger. One fang was in the nail of the finger and the other was deeply embedded in the flesh of the finger.
My main...
Found a quantity of these floating in my G. pulchripes water dish.
Sorry for the less than stellar image. I have a scope but images are being captured by holding my iphone to the scope objective. Any help would be appreciated. I'm assuming at this point they are not mites.
Thanks...
The whole Aphonopelma genus is in a questionable state these days. Chris Hamilton has been working on revising it based upon DNA. Hopefully he'll publish soon. Here's a link to his site. http://www.8legs2fangs.com/Site/Aphonopelma.html
Thanks. For now I'm going to act as if it is viable and wait and see. I think you're right, most likely WC. She is a beauty though and while I didn't start out planning on having a brood, I won't turn it down if she does end up having a viable egg sac.
I'm sure as we get closer to 30 days if...
Hi All,
It's been a while since I posted. All my spiders are healthy and happy and I'm feeling like a much more accomplished T-keeper.
I do have a question. I have a female Aphonopelma anax which I bought from ZooKeeper here in Austin last August. She has not molted since I purchased her...
According to Wikipedia, "The triangulate cobweb spider is known to prey on many other types of arthropods, including ants (including fire ants), other spiders, pillbugs, and ticks. It preys on several other spiders believed to be harmful to humans, including the hobo spider and the brown...
My audax is in a container similar to this. Link It's not quite the same, as mine is homemade but you get the idea. The spider stays in the lid. I keep a small water dish in the bottom and toss in a small cricket every now and then and it's one happy little audax!
I'm really excited your...
Not to worry. T's will often go extended periods of time without eating. Grammostola rosea are notorious for that (sometimes for months on end!). She might just be stressed or she may be getting ready to molt. Resist the temptation to be overly intrusive with her and she'll be fine.

I got my G. pulchripes 13 months ago to the day. At that time she was an itsy bitsy 1/4 inch sling. She is now about 3 inches and from her last molt is a confirmed female. Great spider. Have fun and welcome to the AB.
Cheers,

Chris Hamilton is great! I can't wait for his reworking of Aphonopelma to be published. Here is a link to his website 8legs2fangs.
...and here's a link to one of his papers. "Species Delimitation and Phylogeography of Aphonopelma hentzi (Araneae, Mygalomorphae, Theraphosidae): Cryptic...
Hi Rawhin, I can't answer your question but you might get more response if you posted this in the Tarantula Questions and Answers. More people will be look there than in this picture forum.

Could anyone point me in the direction of how to use and understand Platnick as a non-biologist? I read the introduction to the World Spider Catalog and felt even more stupid than before I read it. I've looked for some explanations but haven't found any.

Thanks Poec54. Saran Wrap added over 50% of the KK. I think she is big enough that as long as the top of the KK is firmly closed, attempts to escape will be futile.

Thanks Poec54. I really value your expertise with pokies. I have her in a small KK. S(he) has a water dish, a bark hide against one side and the substrate is just a tad on the moist side. We keep our house at between 78 and 80 (Fahrenheit) so temp should be good. I wonder about telling the...
