Smeringurus mesaensis, dune scorpions, are also a really fun species. Mine is very fast and active, and you won't need to worry about mixing in clay for a burrowing substrate because they like loose sand instead.
Ordered two wheel bugs from Justin which arrived quickly and well-packed. One was DOA due to unavoidable circumstances, but Justin was very generous and offered credit even though it really wasn't any fault of his own.
Great seller with a wide range of interesting invertebrates, would...
I think one of the most beautiful things about this hobby is that it teaches us to view a group of animals from a completely different perspective than we're used to.
We as humans have a very endothermic view of the world where there's energy and brainpower to spare so that we can frolic and...
I keep a ton of adult females in deli cups, I find that they're pretty slow and predictable so maintenance is easy. Often, they'll just curl up and play dead when spooked. I wouldn't be too put-off by their venomous reputation since they're basically incapable of putting on sudden bursts of...
I received mine as a sling and stayed perpetually burrowed until it hit about 3-4 inches. In my experience, they get really bold once they reach a reasonable size and literally never stop eating.
I've heard that they supposedly molt very frequently when young, but mine molts only once every...
I would stick to a larger tank if you're going to confine your colony, probably a 10-20 gallon aquarium depending on how large you expect the colony to grow. I've personally never experimented with yellowjackets or hornets before, but heard they are a lot less peaceful than paper wasps, so I...
Hadrurus are pretty famous for their digging abilities, I have a spadix that has made three separate tunnels and alternates between each one so frequently I could swear she's playing "musical burrows" or something
Although I'm not sure if this is normal for these scorpions, mine hasn't eaten in...
I would personally do a 33% clay 67% sand mix instead of pure clay, since that gets really hard and the scorpion might have trouble tunneling in it. I use this combination for my H. spadix and it has no trouble making burrows in it.
Sphagnum moss (I'm assuming the soil-like peat moss and not the dried plants themselves) is an excellent and a commonly used substrate for tarantulas. Time will tell, but for now your tarantula seems fine, and burrowing is a completely normal and typical behavior of young tarantulas.
I received my H. spadix in the beginning of October and it was very active for about a month, then has holed itself up in its burrow ever since. I can see it inside its burrow, and it occasionally takes a cricket, but as far as I'm aware of it has not actually left its burrow a single time (I...
1. How mature is the tank going to be? From my experience dwarf shrimp fare a lot better when introduced to an older tank than when introduced to a newly cycled one. I've never personally kept CRS though, so you might need to ask other people on this one. (I've kept Amanos, RCS, vampire shrimp...
