If you need ID help, contact @Collin Clary. He's the best with IDing scorpionids. It seems highly likely that you have different species if you got them from different places. Who knows though.
I agree with the deeper substrate - mine love to burrow. Hence the common name 'burrowing scorpion'. You don't want to keep them too moist, but you also don't want to keep them bone dry. If your substrate is deep enough, they'll find the humidity gradient they want. Just make sure to keep the...
Paruroctonus baergi and xanthus are wonderful beginner scorpions, as well as any of the Hadrurus genus. I've had breeding success with baergi, limited success with xanthus, and am raising up some captive born Hadrurus pallidus right now. I have a few baergi babies that I'm raising up right now...
I second what @darkness975 said about Heterometrus. They generally prefer warmer temps than what a lot of houses are kept at... unless you like your house in the high 70s to low 80s like me ;) Keep them warm and humid, with a deep substrate to burrow into.
There are quite a few really good breeders on AB. The two who got me started into collecting and breeding scorpions are @gromgrom and @brandontmyers, both great people to deal with. I highly recommend getting animals from them.
Yeah, I hear you there. Most genera are like that though, save for a few buthids. Garridoi is the really the only other one I see somewhat commonly offered.
@Collin Clary is the person to ask for IDing between Pandinus species. I would like to say imperator, definitely a Pandinus. Not 100% sure on the sex. Differentiating factors are the size of the pectines and the shape of the genital operculum.
Oh I know that they didn't drop out of the hobby due to lack of interest, but I remember a time when they were so common that nobody cared to breed them. Hence their big drop off: gets CITES listed, hobby too reliant upon imports. I know it's turned around a bit with imperator, lets hope there...
That actually makes quite a bit of sense. They used to be so much more expensive and valuable than imperator. Now imperator are less common, but dictator are still quite a bit rarer.
Cavimanus just dropped off, same reason as imperator? Nobody cared?
My LPS had some dictator for sale. I traded for them all and decided to ID them with help from the boards. Turned out they are imperator, very obviously. I mean, I'm not complaining, any Pandinus are wonderful. I'm just wondering how many dictator are actually around.
Scorpions don't have a huge lifespan difference like tarantulas. For a big, hardy scorpion, what everyone said is true. Hadrurus are great desert species with mild venom. Hadogenes are huge, and pretty shy. Heterometrus are generally pissy, but very hardy and very large. Gotta keep them warm and...
